GM foods are safe to eat – that’s what we are told time and time again. So many people have eaten them that if there was any possibility of health problems we would have seen it by now – that’s what our regulators and politicians keep saying. And yet an article published in of all places, the […]
We read a lot about ‘risk’ in our office. Comparing the risks of certain things is always tricky and sometimes the facts just get lost in what seems to be an escalating noise about how threatening and unsafe the world is in general. Several things have caught my eye in the last week or so. […]
It’s one of those statistics that you actually have to sit down to contemplate. According to a new study nearly 70% of Americans are taking at least one prescription drug, more than half take two, and 20% are on five or more. The most commonly-prescribed drugs, said the researchers at the prestigious Mayo clinic, are […]
Some people might ask why this website, which is mostly concerned with natural health, has taken it upon itself to become more and more outspoken about genetically modified food. Why not, instead, just post a lot of nice articles about how good organic is, rather than how bad GM is? What does GM have to […]
It’s been another one of those weeks where natural medicine has come under attack. A new book by a vocal natural medicine critic Dr Paul Ofitt claims that vitamins and herbal remedies can kill you. These same old arguments by the same old people are getting to be more than tedious and I just have […]
Last weekend more than 2 million people worldwide joined a March Against Monsanto. While Monsanto has become the focus of many people’s justified ire, the real issue extended beyond the company that has brought us such scientific ‘miracles’ as Agent Orange and aspartame to the continued skulduggery of all the biotech companies including Syngenta, BASF, […]
Regulating Herbal Practitioners – What’s the Hold-up?
On 16th February 2011, then-health secretary Andrew Lansley MP promised to make herbal medicine a state-recognised profession. Now, the UK government may be about to break this promise. Ironically, the various skeptic groups who complain the loudest about how herbal medicine is ‘completely unregulated’ have also been the most vociferous opponents of statutory regulation of […]
Monday was a very good day for bees. The EU, for once, stood on the side of the angels and voted to suspend the use of three toxic neonicotinoid pesticides. But the victory came with conditions. The suspension is only for two years. It could be reversed if, in the interim, scientific data can show neonics […]
The Arctic. You know, that remote place that ‘explorers’ like to conquer but beyond that that has nothing to do with the rest of us. Well it turns out that the Arctic is with us every day. It’s right here, in our homes and our gardens; and inevitably what we do the the Arctic we […]
What we do to the bees we do to ourselves. Imagine what it must be like to forget your way home. To not be able to communicate effectively with others, especially those you live with. To forget the faces, colours, sounds and smells that have been the landmarks in your ‘map’ of life. These things […]
